This 18' strip-planked ocean kayak was designed for a Canadian builder who wanted a boat that offered a bit more hip, knee and toe room than he was finding in existing designs. While comfortable for anyone of average size, the extra space designed into the Camden 18 will be appreciated by those of you who like a little extra room. Designed for camp/cruising, the design features a secure, hatched storage area forward and a secondary seat aft for small fry. A pair of these boats would be perfect for family outings, offering more storage and flexibility than a standard, single kayak -- perfect for extended trips and explorations.

The lines of the Camden 18 have been developed for a user with average strength and experience. This is not a twitchy sprint-boat but rather an open-water kayak, designed to be comfortable to paddle at reasonable speeds for long periods of time while carrying a reasonable load. The hull has a gentle flair forward, giving it a fine entry, good buoyancy and spray reduction. Prismatic is optimized for the expected cruising speed, with the immersed volume carried well forward to control pitching.

The hull and deck are constructed of standard red cedar strip-planking built up over station molds with an epoxy/glass overlay for strength and durability. Full-size patterns for station molds and fore and aft stems are provided as a standard part of the plan set. The builder will find that plan details are straight-forward and drawn with an eye towards keeping things simple. This is a great family or individual project that's well within the skills of a first-time builder.
