Delta V is an engineering term used to denote velocity change and that's what this design is all about. The NS14
class was developed for competitive and affordable family sailing without any need for abnormal strength or acrobatics
from the crew, opening up this type of sailing to people of all skill levels and ages. Spinnakers and trapezes are not
allowed for class racing events, and total sail area is restricted to 100 square feet. The minimum hull weight requirement
of 150 lbs. guarantees that class legal boats will be affordable to build and will not require any exotic materials or techniques.
When not participating in class events, the deck mounted spinnaker pole and asymmetrical kite can be added for a boat that
will match the performance of anything in its size class.
Delta V's hull shape is all about speed with control, featuring a fine entry angle with a narrow waterline beam. The bottom is
gently arced in section to minimize wetted surface resistance. These features, in combination with a beam on deck of almost
six feet, result in a low resistance boat with great control. With a slightly immersed transom, this shape will go fast
and will utilize all the power you can put to it without bogging down. Delta V's foils and rig are state of the art, high aspect
ratio shapes that allow this design to point to windward as few other boats can.
Construction is straightforward with solid wood strip-planking used for the hull and decks and marine plywood for bulkheads.
The foils are built up lift fashion from laminated cedar and covered with glass cloth. The rig uses a standard aluminum mast,
boom sections and fittings. All hardware is fully specified and detailed on the plan sheets. Full-size patterns are provided for the
construction molds, bulkheads, stem and foil lifts. Built as drawn, the construction molds are self-jigging, saving many hours of
leveling and alignment. Once built, the construction mold can easily be re-used, giving the next builder in your area a head
start, encouraging the growth of the class. Building a Delta V makes a great family project. The plans are complete and detailed.
Anyone with a minimum of woodworking experience and the desire to do so can build this boat.
