The original design in the K series, this entry-level, performance-oriented,
fractional sloop will be fun to build and a blast to sail. This design
originated on the high desert lakes of northern New Mexico. The sailing
conditions on these lakes can be quite challenging, with winds of rapidly
changing strength and direction. We wanted to design a true daysailer that
could cope with these conditions and yet offer considerable performance
potential. If you are limited to a small lake or bay, it is important
to have a boat that challenges you and rewards your improving skills with
better performance. The combination of light weight, good stability and
plenty of power results in a boat that will be exciting and rewarding
to sail under all conditions.
The K-16 is definitely a sailor's boat, fast
and responsive, yet easy to control. The large main incorporates a single line jiffy
reefing system. The jib is mounted on a Harken small boat system furler. All other controls
are within easy reach.
This may seem like overkill on a craft this size but it really reduces the amount of
thrashing around needed to work
the boat, letting you concentrate on boat speed and wind shifts. It's also a boon to those
less experienced with sailing
high-performance boats and for those who do most of their sailing single-handed.
K-16's
hull is constructed of cold-molded western red cedar with
epoxy-glass, bi-directional glass cloth sheathing;
all other structures are marine plywood. This type of construction is beautiful
and strong, offering nearly the best strength to weight ratio you can
get in a wooden boat. You can also build in strip-planked cedar if you wish. Simply let us
know at the time of order and we'll provide you with the proper patterns.
Often overlooked in other small designs, K-16's rudder and
daggerboard are highly efficient, low drag, laminar flow, NACA sections. The foils
are constructed lift fashion from full-size patterns, assuring the accuracy needed
for top performance. K-16's mast and boom are standard aluminum sections and all rigging
and hardware are standard, off-the-shelf components.
The plan set consists of highly
detailed 24" x 36" (and larger) professionally scaled sheets, including full-size
station mold, bulkhead and foil patterns. Computer generated offsets are also provided for the
stem and keel plank. Hardware items are fully specified on the plans and all
measurements are provided in both imperial and metric systems. A step by step
construction manual is also included.
