K-23 was designed to be a moderate size, entry-level sport boat without any
cruising affectations. The cuddy is designed for storage only. Eliminating
the deckhouse and accommodations simplifies construction and allows
weight to be reduced for higher performance. The decks are totally clear with over 12' of usable cockpit
length. This allows hardware layout and sheeting angles to be optimized with
lots of flexibility in crew placement for best trim. Designed as an entry-level,
handicap racer or performance daysailer, the K-23 offers exiting sailing for the
average person and does not require undue athletic ability to sail well.
K-23's sail plan is simple and powerful. A standard retractable bowsprit
maximizes spinnaker area and moves the luff forward into clear air.
The non-overlapping 90% jib tacks quickly and sets with just a quick pull
on the sheet. The standard Dwyer aluminum mast is keel-stepped for strength and weight
reduction. Spreaders are swept back, eliminating the need for running backstays.
The outside ballast and overall larger size of this design allows a
cleaner hull shape and finer entry angle relative to the smaller boats
in the K series. Please note, the plan set also includes details for
an optional lifting ballast keel to ease trailer launching and retrieval.
Pre-lofted offsets are provided for all construction molds,
keel plank and stem profile. Full-size patterns are provided for the rudder
and fin/lifting keel.
Construction is of Baltek DuraKore balsa core
strip-planking and marine plywood. The DuraKore system
is a great way to build a boat that's light and strong and is
ideally suited to one-off, amateur construction. For those of you who
may wish to build with more conventional, lower cost materials, instructions are
available for wood veneer cold-molding or solid wood strip-planking. Please state your
preference at time of order.
